Responsibilities

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) will provide supportive, specialized services to adult individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities to maximize each individual’s independence and readiness to participate more fully in the individual’s communities, and potentially in employment opportunities.  The Direct Support Professional will provide face to face services to support the assigned individuals in the achievement of their goals detailed in the Service Plans. The DSP will communicate and work with other team members, family members, and community agency partners; and will document services and collect relevant data.  Services will be provided in an in home/ community-based environment.

 

  • Provide specialized direct services to individuals according to their Service Plan and apply person-centered philosophy in providing services.  Direct services may include (but are not limited to) the development of:
    1. Social skills
    2. Communication skills
    3. Self-care activities (such as cooking, cleaning, personal health, shopping)
    4. Behavioral skills
    5. Skills necessary to participate in the community
    6. Vocational skills
    7. Accessing transportation
    8. Leisure skills
  • Serve as a role model to assigned individuals while providing direct services to individuals.
  • Provide direct care services to assigned clients, as needed, and document services according to HCA standards and licensure and payer requirements.
  • Guide individuals and families in identifying available community resources and help link assigned individuals to applicable, available community resources. 
  • Provide transportation to individuals as necessary, and accompany individuals to appointments, community resources, community events, etc.
  • Develop and maintain effective, positive, and respectful relationships with assigned individuals, while maintaining appropriate boundaries with each individual and caregivers to best assist individuals achieve the maximum level of independence. 
  • Develop and maintain effective, positive, and respectful relationships with assigned individuals’ family members/care givers to best assist individuals achieve the maximum level of independence.
  • Network in the community to establish and maintain positive working relationships with community members and community leaders to facilitate acceptance of integrating and inclusion of the IDD population in the community and at community events.
  • Document services during service provision, and complete and submit any required and requested reports. 

Qualifications

  • At entry level, the candidate must possess at minimum, a High School Diploma.
